A BBC photographer was stopped by police on suspicion of being a terrorist as he took pictures outside Tate Modern.

Jeff Overs, 48, was photographing sunset over St Paul’s Cathedral when a policewoman, with a community support officer, told him she was “stopping people who were taking photographs, as a counter-terrorism measure” and demanded his name, address and date of birth. “I was outraged at such an infringement of my liberty,” he said. “I pointed out that nearly every other person walking along the South Bank was taking pictures of the view using their mobile phones and we had drawn her attention because we were using cameras.
He said the officer said she had stopped many people along the river and he was the first to complain. He watched as she questioned another photographer.Mr Overs went on: “Did these officers seriously believe two people with cameras around their necks photographing the sunset were a danger to national security? Foreign tourists must think Britain has become a police state.” The incident took place on Wednesday - a day before police announced a dramatic fall in the use of anti-terror stop and search powers.
A spokeswoman confirmed the Met had received a formal complaint from a member of the public about an incident outside Tate Modern on Wednesday.
She said: “We recognise the balance between effective policing and respecting the rights of the media and the general public to take photographs.”Guidance around the issue has been made clear to officers and PCSOs.

Alex got a phone call today from Kent Police. He was at work and they spoke to his wife. They were ringing to let him know that his complaint has been upheld. The only details he have right now is the phrase unlawful arrest and that that they want to say sorry.
The message was that they are keen to speak to him. That they will be writing to him with the details asked for in his letter of complaint.
So how about that then ehh? Looks like a photographers rights have been upheld. he’s a happy snapper!

A giant camera has appeared at London Waterloo station this morning, providing passers by with a fun visual focus while travelling into and out of London. The larger than life camera is the last of a series of objects which have been magnified and brought to life by Panasonic to illustrate the powerful 8 x optical zoom lens of the new super compact camera the Lumix DMC-ZX1. Further installations include a giant conker, postbox, traffic cone, park bench, pigeon and crumpled coffee cup. These six sculptures are now in position in high profile locations in the respective cities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, London (Neal Street, Covent Garden) and Bristol for the remainder of the week.
A team of 6 artists spent 5 weeks creating the 3.6 metre high and 2 metre wide fibre glass camera which was constructed into place at London Waterloo Station at 4am this morning. The larger than life camera which weighs 160kg will spend the next three days at London Waterloo before moving to London Victoria (26th-28th November) and finally to London Liverpool Street Station (3rd-5th December).

Petition to the UK Government to abandon copyright plans

Description

We call on the Government to abandon plans to allow free and unhindered reproduction of photographs without payment or credit on non-commercial websites.

This is completely at odds with the Government’s stance on file sharing of other forms of intellectual property (films and music) and raises the prospect of crippling thousands of small businesses while protecting large corporate interests.

The proposal uses phrases like “It must be seen to benefit all parties, not some at the expense of others” and yet the Government’s proposal does exactly that. It takes the work of photographers who have invested time and money in creating work, and gives it to people who have no relationship with that work, for free.

Panasonic brought a ‘giant pigeon’ sculpture to central London this morning in a stunt to publicise the ‘fun’ that can be had with ultra-wideangle lenses. The 1.52×3.2m fibre glass structure was lifted into place next to City Hall, It was then moved further along the River Thames for a photo call in front of the Houses of Parliament.
Panasonic said it commissioned the ‘life-like’ 200kg sculpture to mark the launch of its Lumix DMC-ZX1 digital compact camera which sports an 8x optical zoom. A spokesman said the firm chose the pigeon because the bird has been a ’source of controversy’ since former London Mayor Ken Livingstone banned the feeding of them in Trafalgar Square.

The giant pigeon will spend the next fortnight in Neal Street, Covent Garden.

Other installations that can be spotted in selected UK cities over the next two weeks include a giant conker, traffic cone and ‘crumpled coffee cup’.
